"Letting Go" is a phrase I think all teachers struggle with. This is only my second year of teaching and I have the haredest time stepping back to let my students lead the way. This weeks blog was very interesting. We must as our self the question, "what can my students do on their own?" I have heard many teachers, especially math teachers say their students do great as long as they are guiding them, but when they are left alone to do something they don't know what to do. The students become too dependent on the teacher. What type of society are we creating if we only produce people who ned to be guided?
I believe the reason teachers are so reculent to "let go" is because we know the students have to learn the content in a certain amount of time. We are worried the students can't learn from themselves fast enough. We may be surprised at how much faster students learn when they do the teaching themselves.
